Originally a garden Arbor or a Pergola is a garden feature forming a shaded walk or passageway of pillars that support cross beams and a sturdy open lattice, upon which woody vines are trained, and is usually a feature in more formal and ornate gardens.
However, an arbor can be a wonderful addition to any garden and is fairly simple to build or install.
While you can install a store bought arbor such at the ones displayed in online stores such as this, you can as even fashion one by yourself.
You can erect a rough three sided structure in your garden using nothing more than three wooden posts: two of which are securely hammered into the ground and one which is placed over the top and secured forming an inverted U.
While this is not a structure that is very attractive by itself, a simple arbor such as this is instantly enhanced by a simple, quick growing creeper.
So when you fashion your own arbor at home, do so in an area where you will find in easy to plant a pretty flowering climber or creeper which will quickly cover the rough structure and add a beautiful detail to your garden, an arch that you yourself have constructed.
