Imagine growing your own vegetables and herbs in your kitchen! The idea of kitchen gardening is not only exciting but eco-friendly as well. Many of us are fond of gardens and growing daily necessary vegetables like carrots, corn, beet, spinach, chili, etc. makes the food even tastier. The vegetable grown in the kitchen garden is fresh and free from chemicals and pesticides. But there are certain guidelines which one needs to follow in order to maintain their kitchen garden.
• Choose a plot:
It is imperative to choose the right spot for growing your vegetables. The plot should receive an adequate amount of sunlight and must have a stable environment. Vegetables require at least 6 hours of sunlight for photosynthesis. Besides, choose a plot that has a perfect weather balance. Too much of wind or rain can damage your veggies. The plot should have proper water, air, sunlight, and shed.
• Start with a small garden:
It is advisable to start by planting the minimum amount of crops. Garden is trial and testing. You can face failure, your crops can get damaged, and many other adverse situations can occur. So it is best to start with a small garden initially and then advance slowly.
• Build your soil:
Good soil is essential for the proper growth of the vegetables. Loamy soil helps in yielding high-quality products. Organically rich soil helps the plants receive more nutrients from the soil. One such way to improve the fertility of the soil is by raising the soil bed. Studies reveal that raised beds not only saves time but also yield four times better crops.
Apart from this, proper drainage system should be maintained. I water stagnates in the soil it will destroy the roots. But it shouldn’t drain quickly as well. Design the garden in a way that the plants receive adequate amount of water for growth without overdoing it.
• Use good fertilizer:
Besides the natural soil texture, every plant requires fertilizers for proper growth. The amount and necessity of the fertilizers vary from plant to plant. While adding fertilizer, dig up the soil near the roots and sprinkle it. The again cover it with the soil. Fertilize your plants at regular intervals for better results.
• Create round out beds:
The shape of the soil bed can also create a difference in crop yield. It is seen that raised beds are space saving if their tops are crafted in the form of an arch. This will give wider space to plant the crop than a flatbed.
• Use high-quality seeds:
Buying seed packets might sound cost-effective than purchasing a small plant but choose high-quality seeds. You can even grow vegetables from the scraps of the vegetables that you purchase from the market. Cut the root and place it soil, add fertilizers and let it grow.
• Space your crops:
While plantings seedlings or seeds, it is essential to space your crops smartly. Improper spacing can lead to the overshadowing of one plant on the other and damage the growth. Keep a minimum distance between each seedling so that they can receive enough sunlight.
• Water properly and regularly:
Like human beings require water for sustaining; similarly, plants also need sufficient amount of water. Plants will dry in dry or extremely wet soil. Therefore, know the amount of water required.
If you don’t have a backyard for planting crops, you can grow vegetables in pots as well. But remember to place them in proper sunlight, add fertilizer, and sprinkle water. Most importantly, keep them away from bugs.
